Akaltye (pronounced “aculcha”) is an annual event at which 25-30 specially selected Indigenous secondary school students come together from surrounding communities for a week of science and technology workshops and learning.
The aim is to encourage the students to pursue careers in the science and technology industries so they can use these skills to assist their home communities.
The 2005 Akaltye event took place in Weipa. Questacon provided facilitators and ideas for a range of workshops which were enjoyed by the 25 participating students from Far North Queensland communities.
Some of the topics covered by presenters Merryn and Peter at the Weipa Akaltye were the mining process, traditional technologies, astronomy and science and technology career options. Activities took the form of problem solving and team building games, physical challenges, races and presentations.
Questacon was also involved the 2006 program which focussed on professional development for teachers.
