Questacon ScienceLines was invited to participate in a 4-day camp for 30 gifted and talented Koori kids from the Hume region in Victoria. The camp came about as a school Principal saw the need to offer promising high school students additional opportunities and experiences that could not otherwise be provided by the schools, and also aimed to build motivation and confidence in the students.
Along with Questacon’s controlled yet chaotic marble track workshops and flight and rocket show, the students participated in guided ranger walks, art sessions, expression sessions, sports, and a memorable visit to the Penguin Parade
(albeit a parade of two penguins). This inaugural camp enabled teachers and Principals from the Hume region to build relationships, share resources, and plan future activities.
In June 2004, three Questacon presenters visited six schools in the remote Gulf country of Queensland.
Anita, Belinda and Eugenia spent up to three days in each school and ran activity based workshops that highlighted the scientific process. They focused on the topics of friction, light and sight, air and pressure.
Almost 500 students participated in the workshops.
