Australia’s relationship with Japan is Australia’s longest standing, bilateral relationship with any country from the Asia-Pacific region. In the 30 years since the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Australia and Japan, relations have continued to develop and become more closely aligned. The basis of relations between Australia and Japan shall be enduring peace and friendship between the two countries and their people.

This treaty declaration ensures that the Australia-Japan relationship will continue to develop based on trust and mutual confidence.

On 23 November 1988, Australia’s National Science and Technology Centre opened as a joint Australia-Japan Bicentennial Project. The Japanese Government and business community contributed half the cost of the building, the headquarters for Questacon’s national and international operations.

Through the significant investment by both countries, Questacon has achieved a national and international reputation as a leader in the science centre field. Questacon’s achievements continue to have far-reaching impacts.
