Questacon launched its unique online adventure “Burarra Gathering- Sharing Indigenous Knowledge” last week.
The website itself, “Burarra Gathering- Sharing Indigenous Knowledge ” explores the relationship that Indigenous people of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory have with the land. The site invites you to visit Danaja and his grandfather Wala Wala at the land of the Burarra people in central north Arnhem Land. Web visitors can have a go at setting a fish trap, catching mud crabs, finding sticks for making fire, recognising animal tracks and navigating using the stars.
A combination of text and real life photography support the high quality animation, along with a teachers resource section and lots of helpful links. The site combines high-tech computer programming with the traditional culture, art work and land of the Burarra community to create a truly individual experience.
A talented team of dedicated people from Questacon, the Burarra Community, Ma@d Communications and Eye Candy Animation, collaborated to develop this unique project. Representatives from the Burarra community are very pleased with the site, which is taking traditional science and technology from their local area, to the world.
And the world is paying attention. The site is already it is winning awards. Exploratorium-the Museum of Science, Art and Human Perception, based in San Francisco, has already reviewed the innovative site on its list of the “Ten Coolest Sites” on the internet.
