Questacon, Australia’s National Science and Technology Centre, was awarded the Tourist Attraction Award at last night’s Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards held at the National Convention Centre.

“On behalf of the team at Questacon, and in particular our dedicated frontline staff, I am delighted to accept this award,” said Lorraine Neish, Questacon General Manager.

The annual Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards showcase the best of the region’s tourism operators and promote, encourage and reward tourism excellence. The win highlights Questacon as a significant tourist attraction for Canberra and the region.

“This award acknowledges Questacon’s achievements in educational tourism. These achievements, however, would be less effective without partnerships with organisations such as the National Capital Education Tourism Project and the National Capital Attractions Association,” said Ms Neish.

“Questacon is committed to inspiring Australians about science and technology through interactive exhibitions, programmes and science theatre. We are preparing to celebrate 20 years as Australia’s National Science and Technology Centre next year, and look forward to pursuing our vision and continuing to inspire.”

In the last financial year more than 400 000 people visited Questacon in Canberra and over 340 000 people experienced a Questacon outreach programme in regional, rural and remote Australia.

Questacon has won the award in this category in 2003, 2005 and 2006. Questacon will now represent the Canberra and Capital Region at the National Awards to be announced in February 2007.
