Questacon, Australia’s National Science and Technology Centre has capped off its 20th anniversary celebrations with a win at the Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards.
Questacon was awarded the Tourist Attraction Award at last night’s ceremony held at the Great Hall, Parliament House.
“On behalf of the team at Questacon, I am delighted to accept this award. 2008 has been a busy year for Questacon with new exhibitions, new programs and a series of events celebrating our 20th anniversary as Australia’s National Science and Technology Centre,” said Professor Graham Durant, Questacon Director.
The annual Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards encourage and celebrate excellence, quality, professionalism and innovation within the Canberra and Region Tourism industry. This award highlights Questacon’s contribution to the tourism experience and, with four consecutive wins in this category, cements Questacon’s place in Canberra’s tourism industry.
“Questacon is a major innovator in informal learning and presents scientific concepts in an accessible and entertaining way that encourages visitors to explore the fascinating world of science. We are particularly delighted to be recognised with this award during our 20th anniversary year as Australia’s National Science and Technology Centre.
“This award acknowledges Questacon’s contribution to tourism in Canberra and the region. This contribution, however, would be less effective without the collaborative approach to marketing Canberra as a destination by organisations such as the National Capital Educational Tourism Project and the National Capital Attractions Association,” said Professor Durant.
In the last financial year more than 400 000 people visited Questacon in Canberra and over 300 000 people experienced a Questacon outreach program in regional, rural and remote Australia.
Questacon has won the award in this category in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Questacon will now represent the Canberra and Capital Region at the National Awards to be announced in February 2009.
