Questacon—The National Science and Technology Centre was last night awarded its sixth consecutive Tourist Attractions Award at the Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards.
“It is a great honour to receive this award for the sixth time. To be recognised and rewarded as a quality tourist attraction by our industry peers over six years is a remarkable achievement.
“Questacon strives to provide an innovative and dynamic experience for visitors and constantly looks to improve its tourism product. To have this endorsed and acknowledged by the local tourism industry is very pleasing,” said Questacon Director Professor Graham Durant.
The annual Canberra and Capital Region Tourism Awards encourage and celebrate excellence, quality, professionalism and innovation within the local tourism industry.
“Questacon has experienced a remarkable 12 month period. In the last financial year we achieved record visitation of more than 446 000 people, designed and produced new exhibitions and completed a major program of refurbishments to enhance the visitor experience and facilities,” said Professor Durant.
Improvements include a re-designed and relocated café and shop, new ticketing and information desks, increased public spaces within the galleries and an outdoor performance space.
“In 2009-2010, Questacon was pleased to join with Australian Capital Tourism for their Wrapt in Winter and Culture Shock campaigns to showcase the amazing array of tourism experiences available in the region,” said Professor Durant.
Questacon also collaborates with a number of ACT attractions. Since 2001 Questacon has partnered with the Australian Institute of Sport and Cockington Green Gardens to develop and promote the 3infun ticket. The 3infun ticket gives visitors a 10 per cent discount off the entry price at each attraction, plus a free return visit to their favourite. The popularity of the ticket has grown considerably with sales increasing by 20 per cent in the last financial year.
Questacon will represent the Canberra and Capital Region at the Australian Tourism Awards in Perth in March 2011.
