The Helix Nebula

The Helix Nebula

NGC 7293, the Helix Nebula, is the nearest of the planetary nebulae and so appears to be the largest. At more than half a degree across, it is about the same apparent size as the full moon. The nebula is excited by a white dwarf star at its centre, then the exposed core of the star that produced it.
