Mary Wiley-Smith

Ms Mary Wiley-Smith is a Deputy Secretary at the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, and is responsible for the Technology and National Security Division, AusIndustry, Questacon and the National Measurement Institute.

Mary has more than 25 years’ experience in the Australian Public Service where she has held senior executive positions, and has led work on sustainability, energy efficiency, housing affordability and supply, renewable energy, cities, and population policy. Before joining the department, Mary was the Deputy Australian Public Service Commissioner at the Australian Public Service Commission, a role she held from September 2018. Mary was previously in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, working on the Independent Review of the Australian Public Service. She led the pioneering of ‘city deals’ as head of the Cities Division in both the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities, and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

She has held several senior executive roles in a variety of departments, including the former Department of Environment and Energy, where she was Chief Operating Officer, and was at one time head of the Sustainability, Policy and Analysis Division.

Mary grew up in Goulburn, New South Wales, and has a Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University.
