About the team?

Questacon is Australia’s National Science and Technology Centre, we strive to promote greater understanding and awareness of science and technology within the community. We're committed to making that experience fun, interactive, and relevant.

Questacon operates out of two locations in Canberra and also runs many national programs that take to the roads each year to bring science and technology to Australians across the country.

We create opportunities for our visitors to get hands on with science. We provide quality and relevant interactive exhibitions and programs that present science and technology in contemporary contexts. The exhibitions at Questacon aim to delight, engage, inform and inspire our visitors.

Our ideal candidate

We are seeking school students looking to gain work experience in a number of industries including science, technology, engineering, tourism or museum sectors and retail. Our work experience program covers a variety of work areas at Questacon.

What you will do?

We are currently offering the following work experience programs at Questacon.

Visitor Experience

Learn how our Visitor Services staff create a positive and meaningful visitor experience at Questacon. Visitor Service staff work in galleries where they engage visitors with science concepts through our interactive exhibitions, provide a warm welcome, great customer service and orientation to Questacon. This is a 5 day program (9 am - 5 pm) available in Terms 3 and 4. One day will be spent working in our busy retail business where you will get exposure to retail business operations.

Questacon Programs

In this program you will experience first-hand how Questacon staff engage the public with science and technology through demonstrations and open-ended activities. The program staff work across a variety Centre specific programs in order to promote opportunities for all Australians to engage in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This is a five-day program (9 am - 5 pm) available 30 July to 4 August.

Exhibition Design Development

The Design and Development Teams within Questacon are responsible for the evolution and construction of the world class science based interactive exhibits that are seen at Questacon and also in our travelling exhibitions. There are two main teams involved, and there are work experience opportunities that can be tailored to gaining experience in one or both of these sections during your time with us for what could be the start of a unique career in a creative exhibition environment.

Concept and 3D Design: If you are interested in (who and) how we come up with the ideas and designs for our exhibits, or what is involved in turning science into fun and interesting demonstrating and experiences, this is where the process starts. The team will show you how to resolve ideas, develop them into a possible exhibit and what is involved in making that idea a reality. A five day program can be customised to suit a particular interest where possible, and will introduce students to aspects of:

  • Research
  • Concept development
  • User experience
  • Evaluation
  • Prototyping
  • Industrial Design and Engineering development, Computer aided Design and 3D modelling
  • Writing for exhibits

Engineering and Production: If you are interested in making things with your hands or spending time in workshops, playing with electronics, problem solving, or engineering mechanical widgets this is an opportunity to see how those skills and interests are part of the development process for building interactive exhibits. A five day program can be customised to suit a particular interest where possible, and will introduce students to aspects of:

  • Workshop safety and procedures.
  • Industrial Design and Engineering development, Computer aided Design and 3D modelling
  • Software and Electronics programming and development.
  • Computer controlled machining, manual machining and fabrication skills.
  • Materials and construction methods used in exhibit development.

Within the program there is an opportunity for students to spend time in one or more of these sections, please nominate your interests in your application.

This is a 5 day program (8 am - 4 pm) available Terms 3 and 4 (2018) and Terms 1 and 2 (2019).

Eligibility

To be eligible, students must be in Years 10, 11 or 12 only and be participating in a school sponsored work experience program.

Notes

Applications for 2018 placements will open on Monday 30th April (start of term 2) until Monday 28th May 2018. Students or their Work Experience Coordinator are encouraged to apply as early as possible.

There are limited places available for the programs, therefore submitting an application does not guarantee a placement. Applications will be acknowledged on receipt, however only those applicants who can be offered a placement will receive further advice.
