Make at Questacon in Canberra

School Workshops

Hands-on workshops in Canberra, for years 6-12, using simple tools and materials. Workshops focus on the themes of innovation, engineering and technology.

The Questacon Maker Project has available workshops in Term 3 and 4, 2020.

As of Monday 2 March 2020 at 12pm you can log into the Book Canberra Excursions portal and book our Maker Project student workshops for Term 3 and 4, 2020.  

Please note: As of 2020, due to funding changes all Maker Workshops will now incur a fee. A full pricing and program schedule will be available on the Book Canberra Excursions portal in the coming weeks.

Pause

Ball Run

Students will create a unique solution to control the descent of a marble through a maze, using only simple tools and materials. Fast working students are encouraged to refine their run with added restrictions. The challenge can be endless!

Duration: 2 hours
Year Level: 7 - 10
Cost: Free

Maximum 50 students. For safety reasons all participants are required to wear enclosed footwear.

The Innovation Experience

The Innovation Experience teaches your upper primary students that they too can be innovators! Students will learn about innovation first-hand, using their creativity and imagination to rapidly build prototypes for a more sustainable future. They will use simple materials and get up close and personal with emerging technologies like 3D printing… all in two hours!

Duration: 2 hours
Year Level: 6 (Year 7 options available for SA schools)
Cost: Free

Maximum 70 students. For safety reasons all participants are required to wear enclosed footwear.

Robot Hack

Students will create hybrid contraptions from salvaged robots and simple materials. Given parts such as motors and sensors, students use their imagination to figure out how to repurpose the technology to complete our challenges.

Duration: 2 hours
Year Level: 7 - 12
Cost: Free

Rockets

In this workshop students will investigate just how far they can take paper, tape and other simple materials by building, and launching, air-powered rockets! Using our custom-made launchers, students will test various design features to control and optimise their rocket prototypes.

Duration: 2 hours
Year Level: 7 - 9
Cost: Free

Introduction to 3D Design

How can we take an object from our imagination and describe it to a computer? In this workshop, students will explore a range of methods for designing a 3D object and try their hand at computer aided design. By the end of the workshop, students will have designed their own object, which they can continue to refine at home using free software. With links to spatial geometry, material science, and modern design and technology practices, this workshop is a fantastic cross-curriculum opportunity.

The IPTLC is located in Deakin, ACT, and is the location of all Questacon Maker Project school and holiday workshops. Our facility includes extensive workshop spaces, video conference and teleconference capabilities, and specialist manufacture technologies.
