Virtual Excursion

Engaging workshops and events, delivered via video conference to schools across Australia. Questacon Maker Project virtual excursions are available for schools and other education centres with H323 video conference equipment (or compatible). This should be available in all NSW DEC schools, most schools in Victoria and many others across Australia.

Currently, we have three single-session virtual excursions, as well as three longer-term projects offered over several weeks. These project programmes also include a session discussing presentation and communication techniques to equip students with the confidence and skills to effectively present their ideas to an audience. Contact the virtual excursions team for more information.

Mission Astronautica Project

mission astronautica

Students will build a neutrally buoyant object using basic, readily-accessible materials. Along the way, they will cover topics such as buoyancy, forces and mechanisms, as well as discovering how neutral buoyancy relates to astronauts and outer space.

Availability: Contact us for availability
Duration: Five 1 hour session over 6 weeks
Year Level: 7-10
Cost: Free

A detailed project summary, including a timetable of sessions, will be uploaded closer to the date or you can request more information or book by contacting the virtual excursions team.

3D Design Project

3d design

Students will design and create a digital 3D object suitable for 3D printing, whilst gaining experience in engineering and innovation. Along the way, they will cover topics such as computer aided design, computer aided manufacturing, assembly, measurement, geometry and communication.

Availability: Contact us for availability
Duration: Five 1 hour session over 7 weeks
Year Level: 7 - 10
Cost: Free

A detailed project summary, including a timetable of sessions, will be uploaded closer to the date or you can request more information or book by contacting the virtual excursions team.

Make Float Move Project

make float move

Students will build a working moving, floating crane, using readily available materials. Along the way, they will explore topics such as simple mechanics, stability, measurement and geometry.

Availability: Contact us for availability
Duration: Five 1 hour session over 6 weeks
Year Level: 7 - 10

Under the Sea

under the sea

Students will explore life in our ocean, how physical aspects of the deep sea makes it hard to explore and the innovations and endeavours humans have taken to travel to our deepest ocean trenches.

Duration: 1 hour
Year Level: K - 6
Cost: Free

Please contact the virtual excursions team to arrange a session time that suits your school.

Encryption Decryption

encryption decryption

Students will explore the history of using mathematics to hide information, from Julius Caesar to modern computer science. They will investigate how encrypting information keeps their information safe every day, how they can use maths and language to break decipher encryptions from their friends in class, and how Alan Turing saved lives by breaking the Enigma Code in World War II.

Duration: 1 hour
Year Level: 6 - 10
Cost: Free

Please contact the Virtual Excursions team to arrange a session time that suits your school.

Foldable Flight

foldable flight

Students will investigate how design factors can influence flight by making paper planes and drawing examples from real planes. Students will be encouraged to experiment with different elements of their paper plane to explore various aerospace engineering design features.

Duration: 1 hour
Year Level: 3 - 10
Cost: Free
