Annie Mcdonald

In high school, two girlfriends and I started a ukulele band. ‘The Ukuladies’ had one paid gig where we earned $50 each. Having already peaked in my music career, I pursued other passions at university. I studied Environmental Science at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), while performing sketch comedy on the side. I went on to do a PhD at UTS, researching the use of edible plants to remediate heavy metal pollutants from soils and their risks to food safety.

I continued to write quirky songs on ukulele to perform on comedy stages. I soon found out that there were competitions where you could win even more than $50 for communicating science so I wrote a song about my research.

The Questacon Science Circus allows me to combine my love of music, theatre, and science to engage students from all over Australia with science.
