Rain Dance

White tiles on the floor have circular light projection onto them, from a blue box at the back of the tiles.

When raindrops congregate in a cloud to a certain density, rain will fall.

How it works

Use your feet to 'collect' animated raindrops projected onto the floor, until enough water has accumulated to cause rainfall.

Things to try or ask around the exhibit

  • If we work together, we can make it rain sooner.
  • How many raindrops do you need to collect before it starts to rain?

Background

Clouds are made from lots of droplets of water. The droplets move around, bump into each other and merge to form larger droplets. When the droplets are big enough, they fall as rain.

Finding the science in your world

'Cloud seeding' involves human intervention in an attempt to create precipitation or rain. A pilot flying amongst the clouds releases cloud seeding chemicals, to create reactions that involve the formation of ice crystals, but the chemicals used can be harmful and cause unwanted pollution in surrounding ecosystems.
