On 23 November 1988, Questacon opened as a joint Australia-Japan Bicentennial Project. The Japanese Government and business community contributed half the cost of the building, the headquarters for Questacon’s our national and international operations.
Through the significant investment by both countries, Questacon has achieved a national and international reputation as a leader in STEM engagement with far-reaching impacts both within Australia and abroad.
Australia’s relationship with Japan is Australia’s longest standing, bilateral relationship with any country from the Asia-Pacific region. In the 30 years since the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, our friendship has continued to develop.
