About

Starting in STEM is a hands-on professional learning workshop supporting teachers to design inquiry-based STEM learning grounded in local context, community knowledge, and student strengths.

In this workshop, educators explore how STEM learning can connect to what matters in their community, using a design thinking approach to guide students in investigating a challenge or opportunity they care about, generating ideas, and developing meaningful, locally relevant solutions.

The workshop is designed to be flexible and adaptable for regional and remote contexts, with a strong focus on place-based and culturally responsive learning. Teachers will explore how to build on students’ lived experiences, incorporate community perspectives, and design learning that reflects their local environment.

Teachers will gain practical strategies to:

  • build student confidence and engagement through hands-on, inquiry-based learning
  • support diverse learners using low-tech, accessible approaches
  • connect STEM learning to real-world and community contexts
  • design projects that reflect local strengths, culture, and priorities
