Join the Alice Springs STEAM (STEM + Arts) Teacher Network for a special afternoon exploring the Alice Springs Desert Park, a unique local asset that offers free entry for Northern Territory schools. 

This event will provide an opportunity to explore the Desert Park without your students, connecting directly with Desert Park zookeepers and guides to learn more about the rich learning opportunities available to schools. Join a guided tour through their Nocturnal House and how the Desert Park can support authentic learning experiences that connect students with the unique environments of Central Australia. 

Following the guided tour, we will take part in a Questacon-led workshop exploring how to extend the excursion experience into ongoing classroom learning. Together, through curriculum mapping and exploring resources available through the Desert Park, including their new interactive digital map and species information sheets, we will learn how to transform an excursion into a curriculum linked and assessable learning experience in your classroom. 

The afternoon will conclude with catering and connecting with colleagues, providing an opportunity celebrate another great year of teaching in Alice Springs. 

What to expect

  • Take part in a guided tour of the Alice Springs Desert Park, including exploring the Nocturnal House.

  • Meet Desert Park guides and zookeepers and learn more about the free excursion opportunities available to Northern Territory schools. 

  • Explore practical ways to extend excursion experiences into classroom learning through a hands-on workshop facilitated by Questacon. 

  • Connect with fellow primary and secondary teachers from across Alice Springs, share ideas and celebrate the conclusion of another school year. 

Things to know

  • Suitable for all primary and secondary teachers interested in making the most of the Alice Springs Desert Park as a free local learning resource and exploring connections to learning across the curriculum. 

  • The event will involve outdoor activities, including a guided walk-through sections of the Desert Park, so please wear appropriate clothing and sun protection.

  • Sessions are FREE to attend, but registration is required to secure your spot.
